A bold new look for libraries
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC)
NYCC wanted to refresh the children's factual section of their library in Northallerton with a frieze to cover the brutalist brickwork above the book shelves. This bright and cheerful design makes for a much child-friendlier atmosphere, picking out the key topics and classifications to tell a seamless evolutionary story as it flows around the area. Subsequently, a condensed version was commissioned for the library in Sherburn to fit a smaller space.
The library in Selby wanted something entirely different. For the main library they had a prescriptive list of locations and objects they wanted included to reflect the local environment - commonly seen wildlife and historic landmarks like the cathedral. The canal-side warehouses, due for demolition, were to be incorporated in part to try and preserve a piece of history.
